STOCKHOLM (AP) — Three British-born scientists have won this year's Nobel Prize in physics. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences says that David Thouless, Duncan Haldane and Michael Kosterlitz are being recognized for their work that reveals "the secrets of exotic matter." The academy says the three "opened the door" to an unknown world where matter takes unusual states or phases.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Tonight is the one and only debate for the Republican and Democratic vice presidential nominees. Republican and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence faces Democrat and former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine. The debate will be at Virginia's Longwood University.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Hurricane Matthew is passing over part of Haiti with its maximum sustained winds of 145 mph. The Category 4 storm also dropped heavy rain on Jamaica and rainfall has been a threat for Haiti's neighbor, the Dominican Republic. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says Matthew is expected to make landfall again in the lightly populated eastern end of Cuba. And parts of Florida could feel a weakened storm later in the day.

BERLIN (AP) — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is promising "significant" disclosures on subjects including the U.S. election and Google in the coming weeks. Assange, speaking by video link to a 10th anniversary news conference in Berlin, says WikiLeaks plans to start a series of publications this week, but he wouldn't be more specific. Assange has been taking refuge in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London since 2012 as he fights rape allegations in Sweden.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — The school district in New Haven, Connecticut, is banning clown costumes and any "symbols of terror" during this year's Halloween season. Police say an account on Instagram shows four photos of menacing-looking clowns with captions telling several area schools to "watch out" and "wait and see" whether the alleged threats are fake. Authorities are still investigating the authenticity of the posts.
