STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Aug 10, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The world's top female golfer, Annika Sorenstam, took the lead Thursday in the opening round on her home turf in the Scandinavian TPC hosted by Annika.

After beginning on the back nine, Sorenstam carded three birdies and an eagle on the second side to lead the field. She won the event last year at the par-73 Bro Balsta Golf Club.

Sorenstam was 7 under par with 66, giving her a two-stroke lead over Sherri Steinhauer of the United States, who won the Women's British Open. Gwladys Nocera of France, Helen Alfredsson of Sweden and Karen Stupples of England, the 2004 Women's British Open champion, were tied for third place.

Six players were tied for sixth place.
