NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are closing higher on Wall Street, led by gains in technology and health care companies. The Dow Jones industrial average rose nearly 178 points, or 1 percent, to 18,212. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 21 points, or 1 percent, to 2,147. And the Nasdaq composite climbed 76 points, or 1.5 percent, to 5,249.
NEW YORK (AP) — Oil prices edged higher today. Benchmark U.S. crude rose 33 cents to $43.91 per barrel in New York. It fell almost 6 percent in the last two days. Brent crude, used to price international oils, added 74 cents, or 1.6 percent, to $46.59 a barrel in London.
DETROIT (AP) — Fiat Chrysler is recalling more than 1.9 million vehicles worldwide because their air bags might not deploy in a crash. The recall affects certain Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Lancia vehicles from the 2010-2014 model years. Most are in the U.S., but 224,860 were sold in Canada and Mexico and 284,051 were sold outside North America. The automaker says three deaths and five injuries may be related to the issue.
BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — Regulators are issuing an official recall of Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 phone because of the risk that its batteries can explode or catch fire. Samsung already has voluntary recalled the devices, but the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is stepping in on a formal recall. Samsung says it has confirmed a few dozen instances of the problem, out of 2.5 million phones sold.
BALTIMORE (AP) — Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is giving $300 million to Johns Hopkins University to deal with public health challenges. Officials say the money will create the Bloomberg American Health Initiative which will study ways to fight air pollution, gun violence and obesity. Hopkins says Bloomberg has given $1.5 billion to the university since he graduated in 1964.
