NEW YORK (AP) — Top-ranked Novak Djokovic (JOH'-koh-vihch) reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open when Mikhail Youzhny (YOOZ'-nee ) had to retire because of a hamstring injury. Rafael Nadal pulled off his third consecutive straight-sets victory by downing Andrey Kuznetsov (koos-NEHT'-sahv), 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. American Jack Sock was a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 winner against seventh seed Marin Cilic (CHEE'-lihch).

NEW YORK (AP) — Second seed Angelique Kerber breezed into the Round of 16 at the U.S. Open with a 6-1, 6-1 rout of American CiCi Bellis. Eighth seed Madison Keys rallied from down two breaks in the third set to beat Naomi Osaka. Joining Kerber and Keys in the fourth round are seventh seed Roberta Vinci, 13th seed Johanna Konta and No. 14 Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIH'-toh-vah).

UNDATED (AP) — Eighth-ranked Stanford rode Christian McCaffrey's touchdown runs of 41 and 35 yards to a 26-13 victory against visiting Kansas State. Tyler O'Connor was 13 of 18 for 190 yards and three touchdowns to help 12th-rated Michigan State hold off Furman 28-13. Seth Russell threw four touchdown passes in less than a half as 23rd-ranked Baylor crushed Northwestern State 55-7.

UNDATED (AP) — Toronto's lead in the AL East is down to one game over Boston following the Blue Jays' 8-3 loss to Tampa Bay and the Red Sox's 16-2 pounding of Oakland. The Indians knocked off Miami 6-2 to maintain their 4 ½-game lead over Detroit in the AL Central. And Texas outscored Houston 10-8 to stretch its lead in the AL West to 9 ½ games over the Astros.

UNDATED (AP) — The NL East-leading Washington Nationals trimmed their magic number to 18 by beating the second-place New York Mets, 4-1. The Cubs' 2-1 win over San Francisco and the Cardinals' 3-2 loss to Cincinnati reduces Chicago's magic number to 13 for wrapping up the NL Central crown. The Dodgers were 4-2 losers against San Diego, leaving Los Angeles with a two-game lead over the Giants in the NL West.
