This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

If you live along the Wasatch Front and you're in the market for a new Honda Motorcycle or ATV, almost assuredly, someone will recommend the name Garrett Honda Sales in Nephi ... not only for their products, but for their excellent customer care.

Garrett Honda had its humble beginnings in the spring of 1961. As an agent for the Conoco Oil Company, Glade Sanders and his wife Lucy Garrett operated a small gas station and convenience store on Nephi's main street. During this time, Juab County was experiencing a price war on furnace oil, and agents from surrounding counties were quick to seize the opportunity to enhance their bottom line. While purchasing oil at Glade's bulk plant in Nephi, an agent from Fillmore approached Glade with a proposition. He had bought several Honda C-50 motorcycles and was unable to sell any of them. He asked Glade if he wouldn't mind taking and selling them. Glade reluctantly took one of the bikes home, and sensing Lucy's concern about the new business venture, he quickly excused himself to finish his deliveries for the day. Upon returning later that afternoon, Glade learned that Lucy had already managed to sell the little motorcycle! This little scenario played itself out several more times over the next 10 days until finally the couple sold all of the motorcycles the other agent had purchased.

Given their success, Glade and Lucy applied to Honda Motor Company in Los Angeles for a dealership. After waiting for two months without a written reply, finally a Japanese man appeared at the station riding a Honda Mo-ped scooter. The man had just flown a Cessna airplane to the Nephi airport and was ready to sign Glade and Lucy as Honda's 539th dealer, Utah's second oldest Honda dealership.

Three generations later, Garrett Honda Sales continues to thrive and has grown to be one of the intermountain West's most successful dealerships. The convenience store and gas station are now gone, but the quality of service and care remains the same as Glade's sons Kirk and Merrill along with grandson Jeff continue to follow Glade's philosophy that it is their customers who have made them who they are.
