SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah man has pleaded guilty to child abuse charges in the death of his 17-month-old stepson.

Codey Levi Jolley was initially charged with murder but entered a plea Friday to lesser counts of child abuse homicide and child abuse.

The 28-year-old faces up to 15 years in prison.

Police say Jolley called 911 on April 29 and said he found Ethan Antes unresponsive in bathwater at their Millcreek home.

But authorities say the toddler and the tub were dry. Ethan died at a hospital two days later.

An autopsy showed multiple bruises and facial burns the boy suffered two weeks earlier. Police say Jolley claimed the child scalded himself with hot coffee, but prosecutors say it was abuse.

Jolley is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 1.
