WASHINGTON, Aug 9, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- U.S. drug regulators may soon permit the over-the-counter sale of a morning-after birth control pill.

That was made possible after the Food and Drug Administration and the pill's maker, Barr Laboratories, agreed on a plan allowing the company to resubmit its application for the birth control pill, known as Plan B, within two weeks, The New York Times reports.

An FDA spokeswoman was quoted as saying her agency would then act quickly on the application.

A regulatory decision on Plan B has been pending for three years with many anti-abortion groups calling it an abortion drug, whereas the drug agency has termed it contraceptive, the report said. Abortion rights supporters have sought easier access to Plan B saying it will help cut abortion rates.

The new agreement would require the application from Barr to restrict Plan B's over-the-counter sales to women older than 18. Those below 18 would get it only with a prescription.
