SALT LAKE CITY — Three more stories from the world of sports.

1. Olympian sells medal to help child with cancer

Polish discus thrower Piotr Malachowski won silver in his event during the Rio Olympics. Instead of keeping it as a reminder of his grand athletic achievement, he sold it — and for a worthwhile cause.

Malachowski put his medal up for auction beginning last Friday. The money was so a 3-year-old Polish boy named Olek Symanski could receive the proper treatment for retinoblastoma.

According to ESPN, Malachowski’s goal was to reach $84,000 to help pay the rest of the estimated $126,000 in treatment costs (about $42,000 had already been raised). The bidding reached $19,000 Tuesday before a Polish billionaire couple purchased the medal to cover the money needed.

“We were able to show that together we can make miracles,” Malachowski wrote in a Facebook post. “My silver medal today is worth much more than a week ago … this is our big joint success.”

2. RSL, Rapids keepers working on tattoo bet

While exchanging jerseys is a tradition in soccer, Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando and Colorado Rapids keeper Tim Howard are reportedly moving on to something a little more permanent.

The two have been buddies and teammates for years. Both have been members of the U.S. National Team.

Now their friendship is being tested facing off against each other in the Rocky Mountain Cup for the first time, but they’ve found a way to make it interesting.

According to the Denver Post, the two are piecing together a tattoo bet for when Colorado travels to RSL Friday for the rivalry match.

Howard told Denver Post reporter Daniel Boniface that a bet is in the works regarding a tattoo exchange from winner to loser.

“If you’re dumb enough to let me tattoo you, I’m happy to do it,” Howard told Boniface. “I just enjoy the art of tattooing, mainly getting them, but I’ve given a few … I’m sure we’ll do something stupid. We usually do.”

Howard signed with Colorado in March and joined the club in June. Rimando joined RSL in 2007.

3. Utes release uniform combo for season-opener

For many college teams across the country (and especially in the state), the season is now within a week away. Per usual, the Utah football team released what the Utes will wear when they hit the gridiron.

The combo for the season-opener Thursday against Southern Utah is white helmet with a new Utah stripe at the top, red jerseys and white pants.

Definitely a solid look for opening weekend.
