KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Militants have launched an attack on the American University of Afghanistan. An Associated Press photographer who was in class on the Kabul campus at the time says he heard an explosion and was shot at when he looked out a window. He and about nine other students managed to escape their classroom and take refuge in a house off campus. Ambulances have arrived at the campus, but there's no word on the number of casualties.
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish tanks and special forces have pushed into Syria in an effort to retake a border town from Islamic State militants. The assault on the town on Jarablus has been backed by U.S. airstrikes, while hundreds of Syrian opposition fighters also joined the battle. Several rebel factions say they have taken control, but are still fighting small pockets of militants. The U.S. has long pushed for more aggressive action by Turkey against IS, but Turkey's move also appears aimed at preventing Syrian Kurdish forces from expanding further across northern Syria.
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden is telling Turkish officials they'll have to be patient with the U.S. legal system as they seek the return of a cleric accused of masterminding last month's failed military coup. In Ankara today, Biden said the U.S. has no interest in protecting anyone who has harmed an ally, but legal standards must be met. He says U.S. legal experts are working with Turkey on the production and evaluation of evidence that needs to be supplied to U.S. courts. Fethullah Gulen (FEH'-too-lah goo-LEN'), who lives in Pennsylvania, has denied any involvement in the coup attempt.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump's campaign says a new coalition of Wisconsin women is backing his presidential bid. Some of the most powerful politicians in the state are involved, including former Lt. Gov. Margaret Farrow and state Senate President Mary Lazich (LAH-zik). The unveiling of the group comes as polls show Trump trailing Hillary Clinton overall in Wisconsin and among women.
