AMATRICE, Italy (AP) — A devastating earthquake rocked central Italy early today, collapsing homes on top of residents while they were sleeping. At least 23 people are reported dead in three hard-hit towns where rescue crews are racing to dig survivors out of the rubble. The toll is expected to rise.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey is leading a military operation into Syria to liberate a border town controlled by the Islamic State group. A Turkish TV station says as many as 20 tanks have crossed into Syria. Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden has arrived in Ankara for talks with Turkish leaders.

TOKYO (AP) — In a rare display of unity, the foreign ministers of China, Japan and South Korea have sharply criticized North Korea's latest submarine missile test during a meeting in Tokyo. South Korean and U.S. officials say North Korea fired a ballistic missile from a submarine into the Sea of Japan.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Clinton campaign says an AP report on the Clinton Foundation is flawed and distorted. The AP found that more than half the people from private interests who met with Hillary Clinton while she was secretary of state gave money to the Foundation. Donald Trump is fiercely criticizing the links between the Clinton Foundation and the State Department.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Donald Trump is suggesting that he's open to "softening" laws dealing with immigrants in the U.S. illegally. It's the latest sign the Republican presidential nominee is considering easing the hardline stance he has taken since the beginning of his campaign. Trump spoke at a town hall taped in Austin, Texas, for Fox News.
