SANDSTON, Va. (AP) — Authorities in Henrico County say a skunk that tried to attack chickens and a dog was infected with rabies, the first confirmed case in the county in 2016.

The Henrico County Police Division said in a statement that Henrico Animal Protection Police was called to the 3700 block of Meadow Road on Sunday for a report of the skunk attacking chickens and a dog. When officers arrived, they learned that the property owner had killed the skunk.

The police department says the skunk's remains were submitted for testing and came back positive.
