CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — The University of Virginia's president is condemning the reported sexual assault of a student.

Charlottesville police say they responded to a reported sexual assault early Saturday morning. According to police, the female victim was approached from behind by a suspect with a knife, pulled from the sidewalk and assaulted.

President Teresa A. Sullivan spoke about the assault during remarks Sunday evening at the opening convocation and honor induction, a mandatory event for first-year and transfer students.

Classes at the school begin Tuesday.
