For thousands of residents in Salt Lake City, the name Cannon is synonymous with a great smile. Thatís because three generations of Cannon dentists have given folks living in and around Utahís capital city a reason to show off their pearly whites.
The tradition began with Dr. Munn Quayle Cannon in 1917, who opened his practice in the Templeton Buildingóa high-rise that once stood on the corner of Main and South Temple where the Kennecott or Gateway East building now stands. Later, Munn Quayle moved his practice two doors east on South Temple to what was once known as the Medical Arts building. His son Munn Dalton joined him to practice there. But they didnít remain there. They moved the practice one more time to 1060 E. 1st South where today Dr. David Cannon, Munn Daltonís son, continues the tradition, caring for more than 3,000 patients.
Through the years, dentistry has no doubt undergone substantial changes. I recently visited David who told me just how much. He said a predominant part of his grandfatherís practice was treating patients with dentures. Back then, getting dentures at middle age was simply an inevitable part of getting old. But these days, weíre keeping our teeth, and theyíre looking better than ever.
David said dentistry has gone from tooth repair to tooth perfectionówhere teeth have never been straighter and smiles have never been brighter. Tooth decay is now highly preventable, he said, though its causeóbacteriaóonce eluded dental experts.
David took over the Cannon practice in 1983 after his father retired. He began treating patients who had gone to his father and even his grandfather. The list has steadily grown over the yearsónot as a result of any kind of advertising but simply from word of mouth. I asked about success stories. David said they happen every day. They are patients overjoyed with their improved smiles, and for him, thatís what makes it all worthwhile. Well, good dentistry certainly shows. Thanks to Dr. David Cannon and the Cannon legacy of great dental care, so many of us have every reason to smile.
