JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — Police in Missouri say a 26-year-old man has been arrested after five people were shot and wounded as they sat in their vehicles. Police say three members of Joplin's Immanuel Lutheran Church were sitting in a church van at a traffic light when they were shot early today. They were headed to St. Louis for a meeting about the church's Comfort Dog ministry. Two dogs were also wounded. Two other people were shot in another vehicle. Police say the shootings appear to be random.
BERLIN (AP) — Police in Switzerland say a Swiss man set a fire and stabbed people on a train in the country's northeast, wounding six people as well as himself. It happened today as the train neared a station near Switzerland's border with Liechtenstein. Police are investigating the motive. They say the 27-year-old suspect had at least one knife and poured out a flammable liquid, which caught fire.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — World track's governing body says it has banned the only Russian in Olympic track and field from competition. A spokesman for the International Association of Athletics Federations says it revoked the eligibility of long jumper Darya Klishina based on new information it received last week. It had previously accepted her application because she is based in the United States. The IAAF says Klishina has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and a decision is expected either tomorrow or Monday. The long jump competition begins Tuesday.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The International Olympic Committee says it's disappointed that U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo called the Sweden team "a bunch of cowards" after they eliminated the Americans in the women's soccer quarterfinal. IOC spokesman Mark Adams described Solo's outburst as "disappointing," but says that "people are free to say those things." Solo was angered by Sweden's defensive style as the United States was held 1-1 through extra time before being ousted in a penalty shootout.
LONDON (AP) — The British actor who played R2-D2 in the "Star Wars" films has died. Kenny Baker was 81. The 3-foot 8-inch actor first appeared inside R2-D2's cylindrical costume in George Lucas's 1977 film "Star Wars." He returned for "The Empire Strikes Back," ''Return of the Jedi" and three prequels released from 1999.
