This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Last week, I talked to Jean Eyre at Lighting Design in Draper and learned of a new system that can make a home fully automated. The system is sold by LAVA Corp. here in Utah and has become the going trend among homeowners.

The company's name - LAVA - is actually an acronym representing the four general functions of its system. "L" for lighting; "A" for audio; "V" for video and "A" for automation as in home automation. Russ Winegar, a partner in the company, told me that the LAVA systems have become popular because of the convenience and security they offer. He said it's the kind of technology that has become a priority with homeowners, and though it may sound high-tech, it's as easy to operate as flipping a switch.

Russ explained how LAVA's lighting system can you get going in the morning and help you rest easy at night. A button labeled "MORNING," for example, can slowly bring the master bedroom lights up to 60 percent, turn on the shower, heat the towels and increase the room temperature. A button labeled "NIGHT" turns off unneeded lights, raises the exterior lighting and arms the security system.

LAVA's audio/video capabilities can fill your home, inside and out, with sound and video. You can hear a CD in the kitchen; listen to a favorite FM station in the family room; watch a DVD in the home theater; or swap any of those options around with the touch of a button.

Russ said that the system even allows you to monitor the status of your home when you're at work or on vacation. Closed-circuit surveillance cameras can be attached so you can see what's happening, and controlling it all can be done with a PC or even a cell phone. Russ told me that some homeowners have used the LAVA systems to monitor vacation homes. In any case, LAVA Corp. will customize its systems for any application. With that kind of convenience, the system is making life around home a little more "LAVAble."
