SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A new trial date has been set in the bribery case against former Utah Attorney General John Swallow after a judge refused to dismiss charges against the former top lawman.

Judge Elizabeth Hruby-Mills on Friday scheduled a 16-day trial starting Feb. 7 for Swallow. He has pleaded not guilty to 13 charges of bribery, evidence tampering and other crimes.

Swallow and his predecessor Mark Shurtleff both faced pay-to-play charges after prosecutors said they accepted money and gifts like spa vacations from businessmen seeking legal protections from regulators.

But a prosecutor last month dropped the case against Shurtleff, arguing that federal investigators were withholding key evidence.

Swallow's attorney also asked for his case to be dismissed, but the prosecutor handling it wants it to move forward. Hruby-Mills ruled last week that the case could proceed.
