SHARPSBURG, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia man has been sentenced to life behind bars after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting his fiancée's 12-year-old daughter.

The Newnan Times-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/2b6Hocg ) 30-year-old Shalin Ren Payne of Sharpsburg was arrested last October and charged with criminal attempt to commit rape, aggravated sexual battery, aggravated child molestation, cruelty to children, sexual exploitation of a child and aggravated assault.

He pleaded guilty Wednesday.

Prosecutor Kevin McMurry says Payne was babysitting the girl while his fiancee was at work when he sexually assaulted her, with her 4-year-old brother nearby.

The girl's mother found Payne on top of her daughter when she returned home. She tried to stop the attack when she was hit by Payne who ran away.

Payne was later arrested by deputies after trying to flee wearing only a T-shirt.
