Bayreuth, Germany (dpa) - An almost forgotten opera by Georg Friedrich Handel is to be performed next month in a theatre in Bayreuth, the German opera centre, the producers said Tuesday.
Giove in Argo premiered in London in 1739 and was cancelled after just two performances. Two German music historians, Steffen Voss and Thomas Synofzik, reconstructed it using archival material.
The performance will take place in the Margrave's Opera House, a venue that is often outshone by the Festspielhaus where the annual Wagner festival takes place in the Bavarian city of Bayreuth.
The September 15-16 show will be by the Concert Royal baroque orchestra and the Collegium Cantorum chamber choir, both of Cologne.
Giove in Argo is a "pasticcio", a patched-together opera using arias from previous operas by Handel, who was born in Germany and late became a British subject.
Some parts of it were newly composed, and the historians believe these parts have never been performed again in modern times.
