QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — Police in Pakistan say at least 30 people have been killed in a bombing in front of a government-run hospital in Quetta. A senior police official says dozens of others have been wounded. The blast happened Monday, shortly after the body of a lawyer killed in a shooting attack earlier in the day was brought into the hospital.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's Emperor Akihito is concerned about his ability to carry out his duties at 82 years old. Akihito talked about his concerns Monday in a rare video message delivered to the public on national TV. There've been recent media reports that Akihito may want to abdicate in the coming years. He has reportedly told palace officials and his family that he doesn't wish to cling to his title with severely reduced responsibilities, and his two sons have accepted the idea.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Firefighters in Southern California are battling a wildfire that quickly grew Sunday, forcing nearby residents to evacuate. The blaze broke out in the afternoon in a state recreation area call Silverwood Lake, about 55 miles east of Los Angeles. Officials are warning that air quality may reach unhealthy levels in areas affected by the smoke.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas City, Kansas waterpark will be closed Monday, following the death of a 10-year-old boy on a water slide billed as the world's largest. Authorities and family say Caleb Thomas Schwab died Sunday at Schlitterbahn Waterpark while on a 168-foot-tall water slide that has 264 stairs leading to the top. The boy was the son of state Rep. Scott Schwab.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Swimmer Michael Phelps has earned the 19th gold medal of his career. Phelps has helped the United States win the 4x100-meter freestyle relay at the Rio Olympics. Phelps took the second leg after Caeleb Dressel led off for the Americans. Defending Olympic champion France took the silver and Australia took the bronze.
