Western settlers ventured into the Moab Valley little more than 100 years ago. Many of them were stockmen and cowboys looking for native grass to support their cattle. And as they settled, they established ranches. The Red Cliffs Adventure Lodge was homesteaded by a cowboy family at the turn of the century and has been a working ranch ever since, raising cattle and horses.
The Red Cliffs Ranch is now the Red Cliffs Adventure Lodge, offering guests a ranch-like experience amid luxurious Western charm.
The lodge sits high on the banks of the Colorado River surrounded by cliffs reaching 2000 feet high. Its interior boasts 20-foot ceilings, wood-paneled walls, log furniture and floors covered in imported Mexican tile. The guestrooms all face east toward the river and feature private patios and kitchenettes. A honeymoon/executive suite overlooking the famous White's rapid is also available and includes an outdoor hot tub.
The lodge also has a large conference room, a small bar and a terraced dining room that features a traditional menu of entrŽe items, homemade desserts and a Sunday brunch.
Outside, guests can swim in the pool or enjoy the spa. There are also tennis courts, volleyball, a shooting range, and of course, access to all of the Moab activities. And keeping with its ranch roots, the resort offers adventurous horseback riding.
But besides its new luxurious accommodations and plentitude of activities, the Red Cliffs Adventure Lodge offers a look at the past. It was where several western favorites such as Wagon Master and Rio Grande were filmed. And much of the memorabilia can be seen throughout the resort and in a special museum inside the lodge.
Colin Fryer, whose other developments have helped make Moab an adventure destination, owns the lodge. And the ever-friendly Sandi Bastian manages it.
Yes, with the Red Cliffs Adventure Lodge now open, a trip to Moab is certainly a must.
