ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) — Officials say floodwaters have severely damaged businesses in a historic Maryland town and left at least one person dead. Two others are missing in Ellicott City, after storms dropped more than 6 inches of rain on the low-lying former mill town late yesterday. Videos posted on social media show floodwaters rushing down the town's Main Street, sweeping away cars.
LOCKHART, Texas (AP) — The pilot of the hot-air balloon that crashed in Texas yesterday, killing 16 people, is being remembered as a good pilot who was cautious about keeping his passengers safe. That's according to a woman who says she used to date Skip Nichols and assisted him with a Missouri-based balloon business. Wendy Bartch told the Austin American-Statesman that Nichols had been involved with hot air balloons for about two decades. Federal investigators haven't publicly identified the pilot or the company that operated the balloon.
PLEASANT HILL, N.C. (AP) — Authorities say a man has been shot and killed in a confrontation with deputies in northern North Carolina. Local media outlets report that deputies were trying to arrest a man who had allegedly assaulted his wife when a fight broke out, and the man was killed. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says President Barack Obama will tout progress on reducing homelessness among veterans in an address to a veterans' organization tomorrow. The president will also announce that the administration is halfway toward building a massive veterans' health database when he addresses the annual convention of the Disabled American Veterans in Atlanta.
KRAKOW, Poland (AP) — A Polish plane carrying Pope Francis has taken off from Krakow, ending the pontiff's busy five-day visit to Poland. A Polish military band played tunes including "When the Saints Go Marching In" as Francis arrived on the tarmac. Heavy rain led officials to shorten the farewell ceremony.
