This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

I remember my first attempts at lawn care. I thought what appeared to be dry areas in the lawn were caused from a lack of water. So I applied fertilizers and watered those areas a lot. But I later learned that I was actually doing more damage. What the lawn needed was a natural fertilizer and just the right amount of water.

At that time, it was hard to find a good, natural fertilizer just for residential lawns. But these days, it’s a lot easier. In fact, I recently learned of NaturaLawn of America, a company that has developed a safer and more effective way of treating lawns in all climates. Headquartered in Frederick, Maryland, NaturaLawn of America has proven its success by building franchises in 24 states.

Here in Utah, Tom Kupka, a veteran of the sales and marketing arena, bought a franchise last fall. He was impressed with NaturaLawn of America’s focus on environmental protection and their innovative approach to natural lawn care.

NaturaLawn of America uses methods that introduces natural and organic-based fertilizers back into the earth. The term “organic” is used to explain that the nitrogen fertilizer sources are derived from something that was once living.

Tom’s interest in protecting the environment stems from his many childhood memories growing up among the cornfields in the wide-open plains of Iowa. During the fifties and sixties, when chemical spraying and pesticides were becoming very popular, he remembers one instance when his father, a corn farmer, took him out into the field, dug down into the soil and said, “Look here, no earthworms in the soil. This is not good what we are doing.”

The harmful chemicals and pesticides used in the fields were doing unnecessary damage to the soil and the environment. Tom’s father soon became a strong proponent of environmentally friendly, organic-based fertilizers. And since then Tom has maintained a keen interest in protecting the environment.

Tom and his company are so dedicated to protecting the environment that their newly constructed office and service shop is the first facility built in the Ironton environmental cleanup area in Utah County.

For Zions Bank, I’m Fred Ball. I’m speaking on business.
