(AP) — Ken Griffey Jr., a five-tool outfielder, and Mike Piazza, probably the best 62nd-round draft pick in the history of pro sports, are the two newest members of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Griffey finished his 22-year big league career with 630 home runs while Piazza had a career batting average of .308 and is fourth all-time in runs driven in by catchers.
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox suspended ace Chris Sale five days without pay for destroying collared throwback uniforms the team was scheduled to wear, costing the 14-game winner about $250,000 of his $9.15 million salary. He is eligible to return Thursday against the crosstown Cubs at Wrigley Field.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — With the August 1 trade deadline approaching, the World Series champion Kansas City Royals may be sellers instead of buyers. Delino DeShields homered in the seventh inning to break a tie and the Texas Rangers beat the Royals 2-1. That dropped the Royals to 48-49, the first time the World Series champions have been below .500 since May 15.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kyle Busch won the Brickyard 400 to make it clean sweep at Indianapolis over the weekend. Busch is the first NASCAR driver to sweep the Xfinity Series and Cup poles and races on the same weekend.
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — There's still a chance that some Russian athletes could compete in next month's Summer Olympics in Rio. The International Olympic Committee punted on the issue, giving individual global sports federations the task of deciding which Russian athletes should be cleared to compete in next month's Rio de Janeiro Games. Russian athletes have been tainted by numerous doping scandals.
