BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Leaders with the Shoshone-Bannock Tribe say they no longer want Idaho to extend its legal reach onto their reservation land. Nearly a half century ago, U.S. Congress passed a law known as "Public Law 280," which allowed Idaho to have jurisdiction over the Shoshone-Bannocks in seven areas _ including roads, juvenile justice and mental health services.
POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho man who suffered severe burns in a boat fire has died from his injuries. The Idaho State Journal reports Tyvan Schmitt died at a Salt Lake City hospital, 3 weeks after the boat on a trailer caught fire after it was filled with fuel at convenience store.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The state's crime labs are working to expedite the processing of forensic evidence used in court cases in response to criticism about rape kit backlogs and testing delays. The Idaho Statesman reports that their efforts are being supported with funding approved by the Legislature.
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (AP) — Twin Falls officials have been inundated with angry emails in connection to a juvenile case in which three underage boys from Iraq and Sudan are accused of assaulting a 5-year-old girl. The Times-News reports that City Council members and the City Manager have received more than 100 emails from people upset about the case, which opponents of Islam and of refugee resettlement say validates their beliefs about Muslims.
