AYRSHIRE, Scotland — Tony Finau’s second day at the 2016 British Open didn’t go as well as his first.
But he’ll still take it.
The Lehi resident and West High graduate carded an even-par 71 to easily make the cut at 4-under 138 over 36 holes. Finau, who is tied for sixth, was just four shots off leader Phil Mickelson at the start of the day — but Lefty continued his par-busting streak with Friday’s 69 to finish at 10-under 132 at Royal Troon Golf Course.
Finau was 2-over after three bogeys on the front nine, but rebounded with a birdie each on the par-4, 482-yard 11th hole and par-3, 220-yard No. 17 to break even on the round.
Fellow Utah native Danny Summerhays also made the cut with a two-day total of 2-over 144. The Farmington native and former BYU golfer was 2-over on the day, but carded two birdies over the final six holes to finish well.
Henrik Stenson trails Mickelson by just one shot for second place through Friday, and Soren Kjeldsen, Keegan Bradley and Zach Johnson sit just above Finau on the leaderboard.
Play resumes for Saturday’s third round at 3 p.m. local time (8 a.m. MT). Summerhays tees off at 10:50 a.m. local time (3:50 a.m. MT).
