This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
Have you ever wondered what those clinical research studies you hear advertised on the radio are really all about? For the past 15 years, JBA Research, also known as Jean Brown Associates, has conducted hundreds of studies that have assisted to bring such medications to market as Vioxx, Celebrex, Ibuprofen, Tramadol, Oxycodone and Toradol. The company, which is based here in Utah, specializes in research for analgesics or medications for pain.
When a pharmaceutical company has developed a drug, it must go through several stages of research before the FDA will approve it. After lab and animal tests, human studies are initiated with stages I-IV. JBA conducts studies for stages II-IV, so the study drug has already been tested in at least one human population. JBA Research is a Site Management Organization or SMO, which means the pharmaceutical company will contact them to become a site that has the patient population to try the study medication. This requires JBA to locate one or more physicians, also known as “Investigators” to oversee the study. All JBA investigators are certified physicians and always approved by the pharmaceutical company.
JBA’s next step is locating the patient population that qualifies to participate in the study. Patients receive free study medication and are cared for by a qualified research nurse. Both the doctor and the patient are compensated for their time and participation.
Hundreds of Utah teenagers and their parents have appreciated the opportunity to participate in a JBA dental study for wisdom tooth extraction. All study participants receive surgery and are compensated for their time. This has been particularly helpful to individuals required to have their wisdom teeth removed to serve an LDS mission.
JBA Research, it’s physicians and study participants have helped to contribute to a solution for others who suffer pain from bunion removal, painful menstrual cycles, gynecological surgery, orthopedic surgery and migraine headaches.
JBA touches lives with its research through its company mission statement of one simple TIP or T-I-P: “T” for teamwork, “I” for integrity and “P” for Professionalism.
