This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Every year, the Mountain West Venture Group lists the Utah Top 100. It’s a list of the state’s fastest growing companies, which shows what industries and, particularly, what businesses are doing well. I was interested in several companies on the list, one of which is Glyphics Communications.

I was amazed to learn that the full-service provider of telecommunications products and services started just seven years ago in the basement of one of the cofounders. In those early days back in 1994, Glyphics Communications was a just a small group brought together with the shared philosophy of “respect for the customer and the customer’s individual needs.”

The Glyphics mission began when the company signed on as an agency of another long-distance reseller in 1995. In time it became clear that, in order to fully manifest the Glyphics founding philosophy, the company had to become its own reseller. That goal was achieved in 1998. The same year, Glyphics started providing conference call services, and the future has never looked brighter.

The company has since outgrown its basement office and moved to a 10,000-square-foot facility in Draper. Glyphics Communications now specializes in audio conferencing and Web conferencing and has added call-center services, and both prepaid and postpaid phone cards to its original long-distance business.

This year, Glyphics made the Utah Top 100 for the second time, coming in at number 33. That’s amazing considering that thousands of eligible applicants are solicited to participate in the competition. Winners are based on four criteria. They must be a U.S. corporation, based in Utah, having reported at least $50,000 in sales in 1996, and they must have been in business for at least five years.

Glyphics Communications has also been recognized nationally. It was listed on the Inc. 500 as one of the 500 fastest growing privately held companies in the country.

Having been named to both lists and with a philosophy based on respect for its customers, Glyphics Communications certainly shows signs a bright future is ahead.

For Zions Bank, I’m Fred Ball. I’m speaking on business.
