This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

You know, to produce a great product or to offer superior service, you’ve got to have passion for what you do. David Wilson, owner of Wilson Audio in Provo, has passion for audio speakers so, of course, he builds the best in the industry.

David’s passion began when he was 13. It was Christmas, and one night as he tried to get some sleep, he awoke to the sound of singing. A look out the window revealed not a group of carolers but a speaker placed on his neighbor’s porch.

The thought that a speaker could reproduce sound that seemed even remotely real intrigued him, and David was soon on his way to pursuing his passion. Growing up, he built homemade speakers and taught himself the scientific method of recording the results of every task.

While he worked in clinical research and then medical equipment design after graduation from BYU, David continued his interest in audio equipment so it wasn’t long until he was making a living doing what he loved. While at BYU, he met his wife Sheryl.

Sheryl shared David’s passion for quality sound. Together, while living in California, they introduced the legendary WAMM speaker in 1981. The WAMM is listed in the 2001 Guiness Book of World Records as the world’s most expensive speaker. Today, they have sold more than 50 sets of those speakers, which now retail for $225,000. By 1988, the Wilsons were running an internationally high-end audio company. Three years later, they moved their business and family to Provo where they now employ 50 people and create state-of-the-art speaker designs for home and professional use. Distributed in over 40 countries, Wilson Audio speakers range in price from $7,500 per pair.

Audio experts have described Wilson speakers as “an exercise in excellence.” They say hearing their sound quality reveals how each piece is played and what each instrumental voice has to say. For David Wilson, the top-of-the-line speakers simply exemplify his passion to hear and produce the best sound.

For Zions Bank, I’m Fred Ball. I’m speaking on business.
