This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

I was driving down State Street in Salt Lake City and saw the huge equipment preparing for a project on 5300 South. This is the site where the giant Murray smokestack soared into the sky. I remembered that Intermountain Health Care (IHC) had announced a project for this property so I called Tim Bricker of IHC for an update.

Over 100 acres are being prepared for the new Intermountain Medical Center. It is anticipated that the hospital campus will be completed in 2006. Tim explained that the motto for the new facility would be "The Science of Medicine..The Spirit of Caring..The Miracle of Healing." There will be approximately 1 million square feet of finished buildings on the campus.

Initially there will be two 6 or 7 story towers in the hospital campus. Eventually, it is planned that a third high tower will be added. There will be special buildings for heart/cardio vascular work and a special facility for a women's, newborn, birthing facility. Special buildings will be constructed for a diagnostic treatment center and a special facility for surgery, emergency, x-ray and pediatrics. There will also be two physician office buildings that will each accommodate 150 doctor offices.

As you can imagine, this is a huge project. The location is very good. It is adjacent to a Trax station, near the off and on ramps from the I-15 freeway, and State Street is a major traffic artery of the valley.

I asked Tim Bricker if IHC planned on closing the Cottonwood Hospital because of the near proximity. He told me 'No, it will not close but there will be some major changes of the mission for the facility. TOSH, or The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital, will remain as will special outpatient and orthopedic surgery facilities." The Cottonwood Hospital will be scaled back somewhat because of the new Intermountain Medical Center.

I had heard that a Costco was going to be built on the corner of 5300 South and State Street. I was told that this is correct. There will be a Costco that will be build on the IHC property but this is because of a previous agreement with the developer of the property. The retail outlet will be isolated from the main hospital campus and will not distract from the overall project.

If you drive by the vicinity of 5300 South, I am sure you will be as surprised and impressed, as I was when you see the magnitude of the project.

For Zions Bank, I’m Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
