The weather is getting cooler which means it's time to think about the inevitable coming of winter. Make sure your house is ready for the cold temps and snow with these six tips.

Clean the gutters

Those beautiful orange and red leaves will be falling soon and unfortunately, some of them will fall in your gutter. Clean them out to make sure that they don’t freeze, weigh down your gutters and eventually break them off. Not comfortable doing it alone? Call a handyman in your area.

Caulk around windows and doorframes

Keep the chilly winds outside and the inside warm and cozy by simply caulking around windows and doorframes. You can easily check for holes and cracks and fill them in with a layer of new caulking. If your windows need a little extra help, call a window install and repair expert.

Inspect your roof

Do you see missing or discolored shingles? Are you worried about heavy snow causing leaks in your roof? Take a good look at your roof now before it’s too late to prevent winter damage. Then call an expert to help you fix any issues and give your roof a second life.

Turn up the heat

Nothing’s better than turning on the heat and feeling a nice burst of warm air. It’s not so great when you flip the switch and…nothing. Have your heating system serviced now to avoid freezing this winter. Find a trusted HVAC specialist in your area.

Drain and turn off sprinkler system

You won’t be needing them for the next few months so give them a little bit of love before you settle them in for a long winters’ nap. It’s important to turn off and drain your sprinkler system to avoid cracked pipes and leaks. Call a specialist if you’re not sure how to do it yourself.

Trim dead or overhanging branches

The fluffy white stuff seems soft and light when it’s coming out of the sky but it can really add up and get heavy. Dead tree branches are susceptible to breaking, falling and sometimes causing damage to homes, cars and more. Remove them before the storms roll through. For overhanging or bigger branches or trees, contact an expert.

While you’re enjoying the beautiful, colorful leaves and crisp air, make sure you’re also enjoying the time to prepare your house for winter now before bigger issues pop up. You can always find local experts at KSL Local for whatever your home, yard and service needs.
