NEW YORK, Aug 6, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Pioneering women's art advocate Arlene Raven has succumbed to cancer in New York at the age of 62.
The New York Times reported that Raven, who helped found Los Angeles' Feminist Studio Workshop in 1973, died last Tuesday in her Brooklyn home, ending a life which was focused on raising the feminist consciousness.
An author or editor of nine books, Raven also was once The Village Voice's lead art critic and became a U.S. member of the International Association of Art Critics.
Raven also helped create the women's culture publication, Chrysalis, and played integral roles in founding the Women's Caucus for Art and Lesbian Art Project in 1977.
In addition to her partner, the artist Nancy Grossman, the Times said Raven is survived by her parents, Joe and Annette Rubin, her sister, Phyllis Gelman, and Laura Corkery, her stepdaughter.
