This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Heber Valley is known for a lot of things—Swiss-like surroundings, fresh air, friendly people and some of the best shakes in the state. That’s right. I’m talking about those delicious ice cream mixtures of fruit, candy or chocolate. And where do you get the best shakes in the state? From Granny’s Drive In, of course.

Jan and Allen Eggleston started the business back in 1982 after they remodeled the little red home of Allen’s grandmother. The house just happened to be located on a busy corner of Heber City’s Main Street, and it seemed the perfect location to capture some of the passing traffic.

Jan and Allen chose the food business and specialized in (what I would say is America’s favorite meal) the burger and fries. They called their little place Granny’s Drive In and began offering 57 flavors of shakes. The shakes were big, clearing the 16-ounce cups by two to three inches. Needless to say, the restaurant became an immediate success. They also offered 31 different burgers, including a guacamole burger, and several different chicken sandwiches.

I waitress at Granny’s once said that not only had she made every flavor on the board but she had done so in one day on a busy holiday weekend when the crowd was literally lined up outside the door.

In 1998, David Convington bought Granny’s Drive In from the Egglestons. As a long-time employee, David had learned everything he needed to know about Granny’s since getting a job there while attending high school in 1984.

Because of the restaurant’s success in Heber, David decided to expand the business. He opened a new Granny’s in Provo back in March. To his surprise, Granny’s was so well known, he didn’t need to advertise. He just opened for business, and it’s been busy ever since.

Granny’s 52 employees work unusually hard, making shakes as fast as possible from opening to close. The food is also cooked to order. The great service and good food has helped Granny’s become a favorite spot for fishermen returning from a day at Strawberry and Jordanelle reservoirs as well as families and community groups throughout both Heber and now Utah valleys.

For Zions Bank, I’m Fred Ball. I’m speaking on business.
