This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Simons X-Ray was created in October 1977 in the basement of Spence Simons’ Salt Lake City home and has grown to $4 million in yearly sales.

The Simons X-Ray story had humble beginnings. After 22 years with General Electric’s X-Ray Division, a company downsizing nearly brought Spence’s career to an end. He tried moving to another company, but because he was unable to satisfy customers’ needs to his own expectations, he left.

So, at the insistence of his wife Lucy and with the support of his son Scott, Spence took a second mortgage on their home and formed Simons X-Ray. For the past 23 years, they have successfully provided x-ray equipment, accessories and service throughout the Intermountain area.

Spence retired a few years ago to spend time with his wife. He sold the company to his partner and son Scott Simons, who is the current president and CEO and who now directs the company from 14,500-square foot office and warehouse.

Spence built Simons X-ray’s reputation through quality service, attention to details and a willingness to provide creative solutions to customers’ needs. He used to say, “A job is not done until it’s ‘Simonized!’” Scott and the other seven employees have continued the Simons tradition.

They represent over 300 different manufacturers. Their clientele include hospitals, clinics and private practice physicians. They also service chiropractors, physical therapists, veterinarians and podiatrists. Over the past five years, they’ve installed nearly 125 x-ray rooms in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada.

From unemployment to retirement—with a successful organization continuing on. As the only locally-owned supplier of x-ray equipment in Utah, Simons X-Ray continues the vision of its founder Spencer Simons. So, the next time you’re in front of an x-ray machine, look at the tag…it was probably installed by the good folks at Simons X-ray.

For Zions Bank, I’m Fred Ball. I’m speaking on business.
