TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida police say an armed man killed himself during an encounter with police.

Tallahassee Deputy Police Chief Darrell Furuseth said a preliminary investigation showed that 36-year-old Patrick Keeney died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound shortly after police were called to the man's home early Thursday morning.

Police initially said that Keeney, who is white, died in an exchange of gunfire with two officers. Furuseth said that two shots were fired in rapid succession, but that police had recovered the bullet fired by an officer. He did not know who fired first.

Police had been called to Keeney's home by his wife.

The two officers involved in the encounter have been placed on administrative leave, which is normal procedure following a shooting involving an officer. Police have not disclosed the race or identity of the two officers.
