This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

When traveling, I often use the phone in my hotel room to confirm appointments, make dinner reservations, check show times, call family and friends or order room service. Many people do.

While we think nothing of it, the phone service we get is actually an important part of operations for the hotel. Imagine staying in a place with 250 rooms or more. I would assume that one fourth of the guests make calls at any one time. It's a job that 40 or maybe even 30 years ago required the expertise and attention of a full-time switchboard operator.

But that certainly has changed. Through the relentless pursuit of efficiency, managing telecommunications within a single organization such as a hotel or any kind of business has become an industry all its own. And lucky for us here in Utah, it's one that we don't have to look far to find. In fact I know of one company in Salt Lake City that does very well in providing telecommunications for hotels and businesses. It's called USP Communications.

For 15 years, USP Communications has grown and expanded its services, eventually becoming a nationwide reseller of long distance, inbound 800 number calls, directory assistance and operator services.

Mark and Staci Sain founded the company in 1986 after recognizing that effective communications is really the heart of successful business operations. The Sains created USP Communications to serve the diverse needs of the nation's business environment. And since doing so, USP has earned a reputation for creating innovative communications solutions, solutions that can help clients increase their productivity, lower their cost of doing business and expand their business opportunities.

The company, which includes about 10 employees, offers a number of products, everything from toll free services to international operators from more than 30 countries. And though considerably small in size, USP has contracted with many of America's major hotel chains. Both its products and partnerships have helped it carve a niche in the market.

Yes, managing telecommunications for major companies is a lucrative business. And USP Communications, a Utah company, is ahead of the rest.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
