How would you like to have a job with hours from 11 a.m. until 1 a.m., seven days a week? Thirteen hours a day is a bit much, but Suzy Taylor, the owner of the Branding Iron restaurant in Moab loves her work and her lifestyle.
She emphasized to me that she isn't there every hour because she has special employees who carry a great deal of the load. There is a waitress named Tammy that everyone in Grand County seems to know and appreciate.
The Branding Iron is a Western-themed eatery on highway 191 about three miles south of the city of Moab. I have noticed it as I have approached the turn -off to the beautiful Moab golf course. The menu stresses that "cowboy meals" are served and invites customers to enjoy "the tastes of the West." There is even a sign on the wall that admonishes "Don't squat with your spurs on."
Carl Tangren, Suzy's dad, started the Branding Iron over 11 years ago. After seven months, Anna Williams bought the restaurant and operated it for four years. Suzy bought the facility in 1994 and brought it back into the Tangren family.
Suzy had food preparation experience cooking for the ranch but discovered it was much different in a restaurant. However, she knew that her food was appreciated at the ranch so she served what she knew how to cook and expanded the restaurant menu to include her specialties. Navajo fry bread is one of her favorite items and has also turned out to be a favorite of her clientele.
Do you like to sing? The Branding Iron seems to be the place for karaoke. There is a sing-a-long on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights and there is no shortage of crooner want-a-be's.
Many businesses in Grand County are really seasonal. They depend heavily on the tourist trade for about nine months of the year. Suzy said she really doesn't have a true down- time. Much of her business is from the locals who keep her busy 12 months of the year.
