The concept of a community drugstore dates back to the 17th century. But at that time, the drugstore was known as an apothecary or storehouse for medicinal remedies. Medicinal plants and minerals had been used as ingredients for therapeutic concoctions since 2700 BC. As ancient physicians found success with their concoctions, they collected and organized them into lists, and in the early 1600s, pharmacy was recognized as a distinct profession. Through the centuries, the pharmacy or drugstore became an integral part of life in Western communities and a ubiquitous kind of business.
These days, drugstores can still be found in every community. But it's rare to see one that stands independent of the large chains or supermarkets. Well, in Riverton, the community drugstore concept still exists despite competition from area grocers.
It's known as Riverton Drug & Gift, an enterprise that has stood as the town's source for medicinal remedies for some 44 years. Even before that it was called Stringham Drug but most residents know a cure for their ailments can always be found at Riverton Drug. In those early years, pharmacist Dee Jones owned the store, and his children occasionally helped him manage it. Even Mom had her input. Hattie suggested selling gifts and collectibles. The gift store was added in 1975 and now includes Precious Moments figurines and pieces from the Department 56 collection.
As the children grew older, two of them followed in Dad's footsteps. Jeff became a pharmacist. Anne got a degree in accounting. They eventually bought the business from their father and now manage it full time.
For Anne and Jeff, maintaining the community drugstore tradition means a personal concern for each of their clients. It means understanding their needs and ensuring that they will correctly follow medicinal procedures. And it's that personal concern that gives clients a reason to continue returning, which many have done since Dee Jones first ran the store.
Yes, Riverton Drug & Gift is the traditional drugstore-an integral part of the Riverton community because of its cures and care.
