LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) — A dementia care facility in southern Washington has settled a negligence lawsuit with the family of a woman who froze to death outside in 2013.
The Daily News of Longview reports (http://goo.gl/GqWgch ) a trial set for Canterbury Gardens and the family of Norma Sheldon was cancelled this month. Settlement terms were not disclosed.
Officials say the temperature was 28 degrees when Sheldon's body was found in an enclosed, open-air courtyard on Dec. 8, 2013.
Facility records show a required midnight bed check wasn't done. The Cowlitz County Coroner's Office said her cause of death was hypothermia.
The state subsequently sanctioned Canterbury and nearly revoked its license. The state and facility eventually reached a settlement that allowed the center to keep its doors open.
A spokeswoman for Canterbury says the facility has improved its operations.
