PROVO — Things were going great for Jordan Chatman this spring.
The son of former BYU All-American Jeff Chatman earned his degree in Asian studies in just two years at BYU and was preparing for law school in the fall. His father even posted on Instagram that the 6-foot-5 guard had been accepted into law school at BYU.
If the younger Chatman pursues graduate school, it will be away from Provo.
The 6-foot-5 redshirt sophomore from Vancouver, Washington will transfer from the program, BYU coach Dave Rose announced Thursday evening.
“Jordan is a great student-athlete,” Rose said in a statement. “We’re proud of what he achieved on and off the court. We wish him and his family the very best.”

Chatman averaged 2.6 points, 1.0 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game in 10 minutes per game in one season with the Cougars after returning from a two-year mission for the LDS Church in Taiwan. He scored a career-high 13 points against Portland on Feb. 25, when he also played a career-best 26 minutes in the 99-81 home win over the Pilots.
Named the Gatorade Washington player of the year as a senior at Union High School, Chatman chose BYU over Utah, Utah State, Washington State, Stanford, Portland and Boston College. He will have three years of eligibility remaining at his graduate transfer destination.
"I would like to thank Coach Rose for the opportunity to play at BYU," Chatman said. "I wish the best for him, his staff and my former teammates in the future."
Chatman’s transfer leaves BYU with just four guards on its current roster in returning starter Nick Emery, recently returned missionary TJ Haws from Lone Peak, Washington prep guard Steven Beo and Elon transfer Elijah Bryant. Walk-on wings Davin Guinn and Zach Frampton can also flex out to add depth to the guard spots.
