SHAWNEE, Okla. (AP) — St. Gregory's University in Shawnee says it is suspending the school's men's lacrosse program for the upcoming school year.

The private, liberal arts university says it's suspending the program for financial reasons and because of a shrinking roster. University athletic director John Martin says the team struggled to maintain an adequate roster for the coming year so the school decided to suspend the program.

St. Gregory's announced the addition of lacrosse as its 17th varsity sport in 2013 and just finished its second full season of competition.

Scholarships for current lacrosse players will be honored through the 2016-2017 academic year.
