Milford's Wright adds to family legacy with saddle bronc state title

HEBER CITY — Utah’s first family of saddle bronc riding added another title Saturday.

Ryder Wright of Milford won the Utah High School Rodeo Association saddle bronc state championship at the finals of the club sports’ event at the Wasatch County Event Complex.

Wright recorded 80 points in the week-long competition, two and a half more than Stetson Wright of Milford. Emery’s McKoy Christiansen and Milford’s Stuart Wright tied for third.

Ryder’s father is two-time world-champion Cody Wright and three of his uncles have won world titles as well.

Grantsville’s Dawson Stewart won the all-around title after amassing 521 1/2 points, followed by Uintah Basin’s Bodell Jessen and Uintah teammate Taylor Boren.

Emery’s Austin Allred took the title in bull riding with a final score of 76.50, and Grantsville’s Ty Allred took the steer wrestling title.

South Utah County’s Wyatt Johnson of Spanish Fork, a nationally recognized bareback rider, repeated as state bareback champion with a winning score of 88 points. Grantsville’s Dawson Stewart won the boys’ cutting state championship.

Spikers’ Dylin Ahlstrom and Wyatt Christensen were champions in team roping, and Gates Hadley added a title for Spikers in tiedown.

In the girls’ competition, Kaytlyn Miller of Enterprise ran away with the all-around title with 745 points, followed by Uintah Basin’s Taylour Latham and Cedar rookie McKenna Coronado.

Carbon’s Kortney Backus edged out Dixie’s McKinley Drake for rodeo queen. Riata Christiansen of Emery was third.

Hayden Madsen of Bear River won the barrel racing title, and Miller won titles in breakaway roping and goat tying. Cedar’s McKenna Coronado was the state champ in girls’ cutting.

Sage Madsen of Morgan won the pole-bending championship.
