NEW YORK (AP) — Players from the Rens youth basketball organization in New York will be honored Thursday at the White House during an anti-gun violence event.
The New Renaissance Basketball Association — or Rens, as the program is known — will be honored for the "wear the orange" program it started last year after four shootings involving former and current teammates. The Rens began wearing orange patches on their team uniforms. More than 300 teams across the country have joined the campaign.
Andy Borman, executive director of the Rens, said Wednesday that his players "have shown strength beyond their age" in leading the campaign against gun violence.
Borman, the nephew of Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and a member of the Blue Devils' 2001 national championship team, will be joined by Rens coach Dwayne Murray of Mt. Vernon High School and six Rens players from grades seven through 11 who will get to scrimmage against President Barack Obama's staff.
