ORLEANS, Mass. (AP) — A New York man who drowned during lifeguard tryouts in a Cape Cod lake was a collegiate swimmer who planned to become an assistant swim coach at his alma mater.

Rescue crews pulled Jack Jakubek, of Newburgh, from Pilgrim Lake around 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The 22-year-old was pronounced dead at Cape Cod Hospital.

Police say Jakubek was trying out for a summer lifeguard position at Nauset Beach. Jakubek had previously worked as a lifeguard in Orleans.

Jakubek had graduated this month from the State University of New York at Cortland, where he was on the swim team.

Brian Tobin, the school's head swimming and diving coach, told the Cape Cod Times that Jakubek was planning to help him coach the swim team in the upcoming year.

Jakubek's death remains under investigation.
