COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — More than 75 years of law and other experience will be blended in a new father-daughter law firm in downtown Columbia.
The father, Alex Sanders, is former chief judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals, former president of the College of Charleston and a former state senator.
The daughter, Zoe Sanders, recently left one of South Carolina's largest law firms, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, where she worked 23 years and was a partner.
Their new firm is called The Sanders Law firm of South Carolina, LLC, with an office at 1513 Hampton St.
Alex Sanders' areas of practice include criminal, civil, trials, appeals and environmental. He currently is property damage claimants' representative in the ongong bankruptcy of W.R. Grace, a manufacturing company.
Zoe Sanders handles criminal, workplace violations, beverage and hospitality licensing, professional licensing and denied disability and health care claims. She is also a former president of the National Association of Women Lawyers.
Both are University of South Carolina Law School graduates. Alex Sanders graduated in 1962; Zoe, in 1992. They will represent plaintiffs.
In a way, the two have been in a law practice before. When Zoe was five years old, Alex Sanders took her to his law office every Saturday morning.
"I had a law office with a fish tank in it where a small shark swam quietly while Zoe played," the older Sanders said.
The office will be a family affair.
Zoe's mother, whose name is also Zoe and is Alex's wife of 51 years, will work for the firm, too.
Zoe the mom will be the firm's chief administrator and marketing adviser and has her own credentials. They include writing a cookbook that raised more than $500,000 in scholarships for the College of Charleston, helping found the South Carolina Humane Society, leading two large church kitchens that serve meals to the homeless and being a former South Carolina skeet shooting champion.
Alex and Zoe the mother will be based in Charleston; Zoe the daughter will be based in Columbia.
