Statesville police release name of man hit by officer

STATESVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Authorities in North Carolina have released the name of a pedestrian who was struck and killed by a Statesville police officer.

Police say 59-year-old John Cousins Jr. of Statesville died about midnight Friday when he was struck by a marked police car.

Iredell County emergency responders pronounced Cousins dead at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved.

Sgt. Scott Reed is on administrative leave while the North Carolina Highway Patrol investigates the death. No charges have been filed.

Family members say Cousins was about three blocks from home when he was hit.
