NEWARK, Del. (AP) — The University of Delaware has announced a commitment to recruiting more diverse students and faculty from under-represented backgrounds.
The News Journal of Wilmington (http://delonline.us/1TjKGwx ) reports that the university released its plan Thursday to focus on recruiting and developing faculty members who are the first in their families to go into academia and are from low-income backgrounds.
The state is currently accepting bids for consultants to study the issue of diversity on Delaware's flagship campus.
UD's Vice Provost for Diversity Carol Henderson says the university had begun working on its diversity plan before the state got involved.
This past fall, about 75 percent of the 15,575 undergraduates at the school's Newark campus were white. About 5 percent of the undergraduates were black, while 22 percent of the state's overall population are black.
