COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Author and journalist Cokie Roberts is speaking at the final event celebrating the 175th anniversary of the South Caroliniana Library.

The library on the University of South Carolina's Horseshoe site is the oldest freestanding academic library in the nation. Its collection specializes in the history of South Carolina.

Roberts speaks Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Drayton Hall Theatre. The author made use of the library's extensive archives while writing books on women who helped shape America.

A reception and behind-the-scenes tour follows in the library.
