SPANISH FORK, Utah (AP) — Authorities have identified a suspect shot and killed by a Utah County sheriff's deputy.
Sheriff's spokesman Spencer Cannon says 33-year-old Mark Daniel Bess was shot Saturday after he allegedly charged at a deputy with a knife.
The deputy had been pursuing Bess, who had several outstanding drug- and traffic-related arrest warrants, in the Lake Shore area west of Spanish Fork.
According to Cannon, the deputy located Bess behind a barn.
The two were between 45 and 50 feet apart when Bess allegedly ignored commands to put down the knife and went at the deputy.
Cannon says the deputy fired at least two shots, striking Bess in the head and body.
He later died at a hospital.
The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave.
The shooting remains under investigation.
