WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump says "America first" will be the "overriding theme" of his administration if he's elected president. He's warning U.S. allies they would be left to defend themselves if they don't "pay their fair share." And he's calling for an easing of tensions with Russia "from a position of strength, only." The Republican front-runner used a teleprompter as he delivered an uncharacteristically formal policy speech at a Washington hotel, a day after sweeping five Northeast primaries.
CHICAGO (AP) — Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert has become one of the highest-ranking politicians in American history to be sentenced to prison. The Illinois Republican was sentenced today to 15 months in prison followed by two years of supervised release. He was also ordered to undergo sex-offender treatment and pay a $250,000 fine that will go to a crime victims fund. The former high school wrestling coach pleaded guilty last fall to violating banking law for paying someone $3.5 million in what was described as hush money to cover up sex abuse.
PARIS (AP) — Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam (AHB'-dehs-lahm) has been returned to France and charged with a host of terror-related offenses. His lawyer says the 26-year-old who was captured in Belgium is being taken to a high-security prison south of Paris. Investigators have said he was instrumental in coordinating logistics for the Nov. 13 attacks that killed 130 people in Paris. But his Belgian lawyer describes him as a "little jerk" with "the intelligence of an empty ashtray" who was "more a follower than a leader."
DALLAS (AP) — A Dallas judge has set a $1,500 bond for former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel (man-ZEHL') in his misdemeanor domestic assault case. His attorney says the 23-year-old quarterback is expected to turn himself in for booking next week. The Heisman Trophy winner and former Texas A&M star was indicted by a grand jury this week after his ex-girlfriend alleged he hit her and threatened to kill her during a night out in January. The charge carries up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A trust company has been appointed to temporarily oversee Prince's multi-million dollar estate. A judge says Bremer Trust now has the authority to manage and supervise Prince's assets and determine his heirs. Bremer will act as special administrator for six months or until a personal representative is appointed. Prince's sister asked for the appointment of a special administrator, saying she believes her brother didn't have a will when he died last week. The value of his estate isn't known.
