SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Salt Lake County Jail is on lockdown following an altercation between an inmate and a corrections officer.
Sheriff's Sgt. Cammie Skogg says the incident occurred Tuesday after an inmate was caught passing food to another prisoner in the medium security unit. She says the officer had been escorting the inmate back to his cell when the inmate punched the officer, starting a brief fight.
The officer called for backup and the inmate was taken to his cell without further incident.
Skogg says the officer suffered minor injuries.
The lockdown went into effect for the entire 2000-inmate facility and will be lifted once an investigation into the incident is complete.
The 21-year-old inmate had been booked in March on outstanding warrants felony shoplifting and misdemeanor drug charges.
